Beating the Winter Blues with Acupuncture at Healthsure

It’s that time of year again. The days are shorter and the weather is colder, which can have an effect on our mood, sleep patterns and energy levels.

This is due to a combination your body recovering from the excesses of Christmas and New Year, cold weather and less serotonin being produced in the brain.

However, acupuncture has been shown to be an effective, natural treatment to beating the winter blues. Studies show that acupuncture can have a positive effect on a dip in the mood during this time of the year, and it can release serotonin, which is essential for both mental and physical health.

At Healthsure, we can offer a tailored treatment plan to help you get back to your best and beat the winter blues.

Acupuncture involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body to alleviate pain, treat various health conditions, and promote general health and wellbeing.

The points on your body that the fine needles, which are approximately the width of a hair, will be inserted into are known as ‘acupuncture points’ and will be determined by your physiotherapist after an initial assessment whereby your physiotherapist will effectively diagnose or detect any imbalances which need to be remedied.

The process, which is virtually painless, stimulates the brain and spinal cord to produce natural pain-relieving chemicals — such as endorphins, melatonin and serotonin — which assist the body’s healing process and assist pain management.

A number of studies back this up and have found that acupuncture provides pain relief(for example, Yuan J et al. Effectiveness of acupuncture for low back pain: a systematic review) and there is evidence that acupuncture has a significant effect on tension type headaches, migraines, as well as a number of musculoskeletal problems.

Acupuncture is extremely effective when used in combination with other physiotherapy treatments such as manual therapy and exercise as it offers pain relief, relaxation and allows the patient to restore normal function.

At Healthsure Physiotherapy, each of our acupuncture treatments are specifically tailored to our patient’s needs. We can assess your condition and provide you with a tailored treatment plan to reduce pain, restore function and get you back to your best.

So whether you have a touch of the winter blues, or you would just like to get your year off to the right start by reducing tension in your body, our physiotherapists are AACP (Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists) registered and can develop an acupuncture treatment to help promote recovery and improve quality of life.
